The airport provides general aviation services including hangar space, fuel, ground handling, aircraft maintenance, and pilot amenities through AvFlight Harrisburg Corporation. Passengers in need of a commercial flight to Chicago, Cleveland, Washington-Dulles, Boston, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Orlando, Detroit, Atlanta, or Toronto can do so via the seven major airlines.
The airport was developed on land where the United States Army were stationed in 1898. The airfield was known as Olmsted Field, by the time the first military aircraft landed in 1918. The Harrisburg Air National Guard Station maintains an office at the airport. The airport encompasses 608 acres of land, along the Susquehanna River, south of the Harrisburg.
