Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium
Throughout the years, Pittsburgh has grown to become the second largest city in the state. One of the top city attractions remains the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium.
The Pittsburgh zoo, established in 1898, is located on seventy-seven acres of land in Highland Park, along the Alleghany River. This accredited member of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, remains one of six major zoo and aquariums in America.
Visit this wonderful zoo to see over 4,000 animals from 475 species, in seven sections throughout the park. Kids love the interactive children's area in Kid's Kingdom, where they can pet zoo animals and play on the playground.
The PPG Aquarium contains a variety of exhibits, including a penguin habitat and a stingray tunnel. The Asian Forest, Tropical Forest, African Savanna, Bears, and Water's Edge exhibits round out the remaining exhibits at the zoo.
Baseball fans in Steel City ready to cheer on the hometown Major League Baseball's Pittsburgh Pirates, know just where to spend the afternoon. They head to PNC Park, located in downtown Pittsburgh, in the North Shore neighborhood along the Allegheny River.
This wonderful baseball park has been the home field for the Pirates since 2001. Construction for PNC Park was funded in conjunction with Heinz Field, the home for the Pittsburgh Steelers and University of Pittsburgh Panthers.
This impressive ballpark features 38,362 seats, limestone in the facade of the ballpark, steel trusswork, a Tuckahoe Bluegrass field and a riverside concourse with a variety of restaurants.
Enjoy a delicious meal, while watching a game, on the outdoor patio of The Hall of Fame Club underneath the scoreboard. Throughout the years, the ballpark has hosted college baseball games, the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and concerts.
Downtown Pittsburgh is home to what is known as the "crown jewel" of Pittsburgh. PPG Place is comprised of six buildings built with the same glass architecture, encompassing three city blocks.
The glass beautifully reflects the downtown buildings, skies and rivers of downtown An icon of the Pittsburgh skyline, the 40-story building reaches a height of 635 feet.
The buildings were constructed by PPG Industries, formally known as Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company, as the location for their headquarters. After three years of construction, PPG Place was completed in 1984.
John Burgee Architects designed the beautiful glass and steel buildings, which feature 231 glass spires. The buildings contain almost one million square feet of PPG Solarban 550 clear reflective glass. In total, there are 19,750 pieces of glass.
The complex contains shops, restaurants, office space, and Wintergarden – featuring an all-glass garden environment. Visit this beautiful complex to admire the outside plaza's fountain and the 140 water jets. During the winter, bring your ice skates for the 9,600-square-foot ice rink, while admiring the 60-foot Christmas Tree in the center.
Cathedral of Learning
Established in 1787, the University of Pittsburgh, established as the Pittsburgh Academy, is one of America's oldest continuously chartered institutions of higher education.
This state-related, active research university, is one of four universities in the Commonwealth System of Higher Education – and remains among the top research universities in the country.
Be sure to tour the 132-acre campus to see the impressive Cathedral of Learning, built in 1931. This historical Late Gothic Revival style building reaches a height of 535 feet, and is the world's second-tallest building on a university. Make time for the Nationality Rooms Tour.
