Visiting Philadelphia

A Pennsylvania Horticultural Society spring tradition fills the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia with gardens, landscapes, and floral arrangements. The 2017 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show opens March 1st and runs through March 9th. In its 185th year, the Philadelphia Flower Show is the world’s oldest and largest flower show. The 2017 theme is ARTiculture, which celebrates the world’s great painters.

Winter is an ideal time to explore Philadelphia’s indoor treasures. The Liberty Bell and other exhibits in downtown Philadelphia’s Independence Visitor Center are must see destinations along with Franklin Square, and on a nice day, a walk through historic Philadelphia neighborhoods.

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University hosts the multi-sensory experience Dinosaurs Unearthed. Running through March 30th, the 2017 exhibit features over a dozen animatronic dinosaurs, as well as a dig site, skeletons, and fossils. Be sure to tour Dinosaur Hall to explore over 30 species and animals.

The Franklin Institute Mandell Center is now hosting One Day in Pompeii through April 27th. The 2017 exhibit showcases over 150 artifacts buried and preserved by the volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Visitors get a glimpse of daily life and associated implements of the ancient Roman city. During the run of One Day in Pompeii, the IMAX Theater is showing the classic movie Ring of Fire portraying the drama of volcanic activity – make it a special visit and see both.
