Visiting Pittsburgh & Western Pennsylvania | Fall 2014
Steel city sports fans have spent the summer’s mild days at the foot of downtown Pittsburgh’s gorgeous skyline, watching the Pirates race for first place in Major League Baseball’s National League Central Division at PNC Park. Get your last chance to see the pirates defend home field when they host the Brewers in a three-game series, September 19th through 21st.
Fall in the ‘Burgh also means the ball bounces back into the hands of Big Ben and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Lucky NFL fans score tickets to see the Black and Yellow defend Heinz Field at home games through December 28th, when they close the season out against the Bengals.
Hockey fans are in luck, too. The 2014-2015 NHL hockey season is gearing up to return and the Pittsburgh Penguins take the ice for the first time on October 9th, against the Ducks. Check the schedule during your Pittsburgh stay to catch a home game at CONSOL Energy Center through April 11th.
Runners and animal lovers alike congregate at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium on November 1st for the 2014 ZooZilla 5K Run/Walk. The race is timed for serious runners, but leisurely walkers are welcome to enjoy the experience as well. Get there early – the race begins at 8 a.m. and a strict limit of 750 participants will be allowed.
An urban and culture hub for the western Pennsylvania region, the Pittsburgh area is a go-to stop for an eclectic assortment of major concert tours. On October 13th, music video masters OK Go visit Mr. Small’s Funhouse & Theatre, and Fleetwood Mac brings decades of iconic hits to CONSOL Energy Center on October 14th.
As changing leaves paint the landscape with a rich palate of fall colors, fall foliage driving tours become a necessity for visitors. Grove City, Saint Mary's, and Du Bois visitors head north to see the splendid scenery between Oil Creek and Titusville, and Pittsburgh visitors can board the Mississippi Queen, an elegant paddlewheel riverboat making October cruises along the Ohio River.
