Visiting Pittsburgh & Western Pennsylvania
This spring, take a trip to Pittsburgh. As the season’s new blooms fill the landscape with color, event calendars in the Steel City and surrounding communities from St. Marys to Grove City to Bentleyville fill with family-friendly fun, both indoors and outdoors. Special events, festivals, big-league sports, and more – it’s a great time to explore western Pennsylvania.
Area sports fans may still be mourning the Pittsburgh Steelers’ tough playoff loss back in January, but the return of Major League Baseball will tide them over until Big Ben and Co. come back this August. Enjoy a beautiful spring or summer day at PNC Park in downtown Pittsburgh as the Pittsburgh Pirates go to bat, all summer long, through the first week of October.
Northeast of Pittsburgh, Indiana is the place to add even more color to your western PA visit this spring. On May 20th and 21st, the 2016 May Mart Flower & Craft Festival brings more than 100 vendors and crafters, along with plenty of food and kids' activities, to the S & T Arena. The free fun gets started at 10 a.m. both days.
Aerophiles and fans of aviation won’t want to miss the 2016 Jimmy Stewart Airport Festival on June 11th and 12th. That’s when the Jimmy Stewart Airport in Indiana hosts two days of vintage aircraft displays, airplane rides, vendors, and more. Come early to make sure you get to see it all – the event takes off at 8 a.m. both days.
Later this summer, 2016 American Spirit Aviation Festival is a similar celebration. Held at St. Marys Municipal Airport, the family-friendly fun features air shows, airplane rides with the Elk Flyers, bi-plane rides, and all kinds of other activities. The one-day-only event soars at 9 a.m.
There are plenty of ways to get out and get active in western PA this summer, and the 2016 Lee Foster Memorial 5K is surely a highlight. Soak up some sunshine in St. Marys by joining residents for a scenic and fun run starting at Memorial Park. Be there early to get your stretches in – the starting line gun sounds at 9 a.m.
